Welcome! This is a giant guide that will teach you all about how to get Minecraft: Story Mode long after it's been removed from storefronts. We often see people getting tricked by misinformation or clicking random links in hopes that they can play the game again, so that's why this website exists, to help stop misinformation and for you to learn how to obtain the game free and safely.

Ad-blocker(s)

uBlock Origin is a free, open-source, up-to-date ad-blocker with over 10 million users. This is by far the best and only ad-blocker we'd recommending.

An ad-blocker is a good thing to have when going on certain sites. Ads are how websites make their money, and people are often blinded by money. Most sites nowadays bombard the user with ads to the point that the main content is overshadowed. They'll often appear as fake download buttons, please either use an ad-blocker or your brain to avoid clicking these.

VPN's (Virtual Private Network)

Surfshark is a great paid VPN that is still cheap.

Nord VPN is a luxury. It’s expensive but it’s by far the best.
Mullvad VPN is a great and simple, very privacy focused VPN. Prices range from cheap to fair, and they all give you the same features, just for a differing amount of time.

A VPN is necessary because you're technically committing piracy, and while torrenting, your ISP (Internet Service Provider) can see everything. While our beliefs of Minecraft: Story Mode being abandonware (not able to purchase realistically anymore) make this justified, your ISP only see what you're doing at face value. Better to be safe than sorry. If this sounds kind of scary, if you choose to direct-download (download through your browser, not through a torrent client), you don't have to worry about this. DO NOT use free VPN's when torrenting, they all sell your data in some way, so use at your own risk, most don't usually support peer-to-peer connections anyway.

Hello everyone,

Unfortunately, nothing built can last forever. So eventually, Minecraft: Story Mode was removed from all stores. I recently saw a post talking about how annoying it is that people keep asking how to get the game in 2024. So we've decided to make a megathread.

Yes, this guide will involve sailing the seven seas, but we’ll provide alternatives if you don’t want to pirate. It’s nearly impossible to get the game properly right now, even if you don’t pirate the game, you’ll just be helping greedy scalpers, Telltale and Mojang will not profit if you choose to purchase the game.

We've noticed that most of the posts on r/MinecraftStoryMode nowadays are either, “guys hoe i get the game in android phone” or, “which disk do i get?” This website will hopefully lessen the amount of these posts and help others in getting the game in working order. It will also hopefully prevent a lot of misinformation and people getting malware.

This site will also double as a console modding thread (sometimes)

Let’s get started!

The different versions of the game

A normal disc that just says “Minecraft Story Mode” contains the first 5 episodes of Season 1. These episodes are not on the disc apart from Episode 1. So if you’re purchasing for a console with no support for redownloading Telltale's episodes, (currently only Xbox 360, though PS3 could be soon), you won’t be able to play the other episodes.

There is/was a digital version of episodes 6-8 called the Adventure Pass. It can/could be applied to the mobile version of the game, (no longer possible, not even when restoring a purchase), and any “Season Pass” version of the game, (no longer possible.) Also worth mentioning that it is viewable on the PS4 store and Xbox One store as well, although it is not purchasable.

“Complete Adventure” disc/cartridge contains all the episodes for Season 1. (Only version available of Season 1 for Wii U and Switch) this version contains all of the Episodes on disc, so buying for Xbox 360 is ok.

“Minecraft Story Mode Season Two” disc/cartridge is the entire second season of the game. The episodes need to be downloaded (with the exception of Nintendo Switch), so again, if you’re on a console with no support for Telltale's episodes (Xbox 360) you can only play episode one unless you hack your console. This is not available for any PS3 or Wii U system.

How each version plays

PC/Mac:

Easily the most definitive and best way to play. Graphics are adjustable, mods are supported and the frame rate is the most stable (depending on your PC, 60fps is obtainable.) Easily pirated and Steam keys are sometimes available too. Both seasons supported.

Xbox One/PS4:

Discs are currently at a fair price, episodes are downloadable, game itself runs great, both Seasons playable. No current way to pirate on Xbox One, but the new PS4 hack makes for the game to be easily obtainable. raw_data on Discord informed me that for whatever reason, the PS4 and Xbox One versions have very slight animation improvements for some characters that no other version has. It's very strange, but welcome nevertheless.

Switch:

Game only runs at 720p, targets 60fps, but on Switch 1 it rarely reaches 60fps outside of menus. Switch 2s push a basically locked 60fps with improved loading times, but resolution is still locked to 720p. Many reported save glitches. Piracy is possible on modded Switch 1 consoles. Physical copies are extremely expensive and hard to come by.

Xbox 360:

The game runs similarly to the switch version, but with a fair bit more lag in S2. Episodes are not downloadable for physical copies anymore, so if you want to play S2, you'll either need to run the BadUpdate exploit or an RGH or JTAG mod is needed. Season Two has poor lighting and aliasing. This port is certainly playable, but not that great nevertheless. (Almost makes me wonder how bad the PS3/Wii U S2 ports could've been.)

PS3:

The game is basically identical to the Xbox 360 version, but is choppier in more demanding areas, frequently falling to 20fps, but usually never below that. (PAMA bossfight and 106 credits are an exception.) Season Two is not available for this platform. Physical copies are very cheap (20-30 USD) and piracy is incredibly easy with the EvilNAT/HEN softmod.

Wii U:

Physical copies are still fairly pricey and hard to come by. Game runs at 720p with horrendous frame rate and reported save glitches. I don’t see much reason to play this version apart from if you only have a Wii U. Season Two is not available for this platform. Piracy is easy as pie with Wii U’s TiramisU exploit. (Pun unintended.)

iOS/Android:

Can't really rank on performance due it varying per device, but at best it's performance is a semi-stable mediocre experience. At worst it's a 15fps, low resolution pile of garbage. iOS version is a pain to obtain, and the Android install is time-consuming. Android has fatal issues on more recent devices, with severe texture glitches, sound glitches and crashes.

Apple TV:
Next to no information is known about this version. I could find scarce recordings of this version online. The frame rate is constantly choppy, even in non-demanding areas, and runs at 720p. Although I have no idea if this was a bad recording, or truly how the game runs. Episodes 6-8 and Season Two were never released on Apple TV (what a surprise) and the Apple TV game files are all but lost to time. If you have an Apple TV with the game installed, please contact an owner (credits page) via Reddit, Discord or Gmail.

Netflix/YouTube:

I can’t really rank this version because it tries to be more of a TV show with interactive elements than a proper game. Up against the other versions it seems to be a watered-down mess, but as its own independent entity, it serves well. Graphics are pre-rendered and look cleaner, and the version is available for free on YouTube (Only episodes 1-5 were ever released).
